Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (David Yates, 2011)
To some, the release of the final installment of the Harry Potter film franchise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 will feel like a goodbye. Fans will be paying tribute to The Boy Who Lived and to everyone involved in his adventures, unearthing memorabilia, recounting how they stayed up all night reading the books, how they lined up for hours just to get the latest book when it was released, and more importantly, how it played an important role in shaping their lives during those years they have invested on J.K. Rowling’s world of magic, friendship and honor.
In this grand finale, we all get a sense of completion; a sense that the filmmakers have done their job to faithfully adhere to Rowling’s gospel and at the same time, add the text with their own vision of how this entire battle has come to play. It is of course, the point of the watching the films: seeing how four directors and two screenwriters (who were lucky enough to get assistance from Rowling herself) have blown up the pictures that have played in our heads as we were reading the books.
Hallows 2 is essentially a war film. Yates shows us that war is gritty. It is never beautiful. There are sacrifices to be made and the casualties will linger on. Sometimes, it will even seem pointless but Rowling frames the struggle of Harry and the entire wizarding world in a way that it represents every facet of our lives. We may not have the gift of magic but we will all emerge victorious, in one way or another. To borrow the words of another brilliant writer, Neil Gaiman in his poem, Instructions “Trust your dreams, trust you heart and trust your story.”

Someday, I’m gonna meet my prince who’ll love me, treat me as a princess and will never hurt me. But my Daddy will forever be my King.

Sometimes I miss it. I miss holding someone’s hand. I miss being held someone’s arm and feel safe and secure. I miss those late night calls and late nights texts. I miss those tight hugs and not letting go. I miss calling that certain someone ” babe” or even “hunny”. I miss those cute cheesy nicknames. I miss those uncontrollable laughs together. I miss sleeping on the phone. Cuddling is always the best. Showering them with kisses and acting silly together. Going out to places and make memories out of them. Playing video games, loser kisses winner. Shopping together, choosing what to buy. Cute necklaces to wear. Getting those unexpected kisses. Teasing each other. Have those silly arguments. Those long stares into each others’ eyes. Cuddling in bed and end up falling asleep. Yeah sometimes, I miss it.
